Qld: 'Jones was father of modern Brisbane'; says Bligh

Queensland Premier ANNA BLIGH has described former Lord Mayor CLEM JONES as the father
of modern Brisbane.

Ms BLIGH says Dr JONES'S life-long civic contribution and love of the city of Brisbane
was unsurpassed.

She says he'll long be remembered for his vision and commitment to transforming Brisbane
from a conservative country town to a vibrant and cosmopolitan city.

Dr JONES died of pneumonia today at the age of 89.

He was Brisbane's longest serving lord mayor .. serving from 1961 to 1975.

A state funeral will be held on Friday at city hall.

Ms BLIGH says her thoughts and prayers go out to CLEM'S friends and family.
