Company Executives Attribute BearCom's Long Life to its Employees, Partners, and Customers
DALLAS -- The past 30 years have seen enormous technological changes, especially in the world of wireless communications. And BearCom, America's only nationwide wireless dealer and integrator, has been there for every minute of it.
Throughout 2011, BearCom will celebrate its 30-year anniversary. Maintaining a business for three decades is a challenging undertaking in any industry--and in the wireless industry specifically, it requires the ability to not only adjust to changes in technology but also in customer needs. "Over our recent history, we've seen the beginning of the digitization of our portfolio and have also learned to integrate the Internet and e-commerce into what we do. That enables us to offer our customers more choices in the way they do business with us--whether it's face-to-face with our sales and service teams, online, or using a toll-free phone number," said BearCom President and CEO Jerry Denham. "The wireless industry will continue to evolve, and we will continue to look for ways to improve our services and create efficiencies to serve our customers' needs as we move into the future."
Founded in 1981 as Bear Communications by Denham and Alyxzander Bear, BearCom has grown from a two-man operation providing two-way radio rentals for special events to the largest dealer and integrator of wireless communications equipment in the U.S., with 26 branch locations and more than 30,000 customers. And many of its earliest customers are still with BearCom today. "The professionals at BearCom have been able to retain our business for nearly three decades because they know their equipment and services don't exist in a vacuum," noted Dwight Tanaka, Senior Vice President of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. "BearCom continually brings cutting-edge technology and a high standard of service to each of our events."
BearCom's very first customer in 1981, Contemporary Services Corporation (CSC), relied on the company to provide rental equipment for special events--including the Rose Bowl and the Super Bowl--and remains a core customer today. Over its 30-year history, BearCom has furnished equipment and services for thousands of major events worldwide, including the 1994 World Cup, the Atlanta and Salt Lake City Olympics, the New York City Marathon in 2010, and various Get Out the Vote campaigns.
BearCom has also enjoyed a long history of working with Motorola, beginning as a provider of rental radios and transitioning into sales when Motorola moved to a distribution model in 1988. Today, BearCom is the world's largest dealer of Motorola two-way radios and has twice won Motorola's Pinnacle of Customer Excellence Award (2006 and 2008). Brent Bisnar, Executive Vice President of BearCom, attributes the success of the two companies' long-term relationship to the willingness to go above and beyond to satisfy customer needs--and to a good match between Motorola's products and BearCom's services. "With 26 branches and a very widely distributed sales force, BearCom has the people, resources, processes, and operational efficiencies in place to create success for our customers," says Bisnar. "Plus, it makes things easy when our primary partner, Motorola, delivers the best products in the industry."
In a relationship-driven business, people are key. In addition to its customers, many of BearCom's employees have been with the company for several decades as well. As an example, Support Services Manager Trudy Gutierrez has been a BearCom employee for more than 24 years. "The 'people' part of our business is the most challenging and yet the most rewarding," said Denham. "There is great gratification when you see people like Trudy succeed and watch them grow and develop. We are very grateful to all our people for helping BearCom succeed and serving our customers so well over the past 30 years."
After Bear Communications merged with PageCom in 1995 to form BearCom, John Watson became Chairman of the combined company. "If anything should be celebrated on our 30th anniversary, it's our people," said Watson. He believes many of the company's employees choose to stay with BearCom because they enjoy what they do and find the work satisfying. "I've been in the wireless industry for more than 20 years, and it's even more exciting today than it was in the beginning. There are more products and more opportunities now than there have ever been, and BearCom will continue to evolve and grow as we move into the future."
When asked where wireless technology--and BearCom--will be in the next 30 years, Jerry Denham mentioned increasing digitization of wireless products, mobilization of the workforce, and development of applications for business-to-business environments. "I can't say exactly where wireless technology will be three decades from now," Denham added. "But hopefully, BearCom will be right in the middle of it."
