DHAKA, JAN. 17 -- THE international investment consultancy firm Mckinsey forecasted that, by 2010, the global business process outsourcing (BPO) business would amount 180 billion dollars. India will be in the prime position. China, the Philippines, and Malaysia will follow India. If Bangladesh can take one percent of the total market share, then it can experience a huge boost in its foreign exchange earnings. This sector is lucrative compared to other sectors as earnings from this service will remain within the country.
But are we prepared enough to benefit from such the lucrative BPO business?
The BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) started issuing licenses from April, 2008 for this. Cost of each license is five thousand taka with duration of 3 to 5 years. For call center entrepreneurs, BTCL is giving leased internet connection at discounted rate.
Currently, Bangladesh is noted as a software development outsourcing destination on a limited scale. Foreign investors directly are opening local offices here and employing local programmers at good salary. Till now, the track record of Bangladesh is good. It has been observed that, Bangladeshi programmers are good at problem solving.
Software development cost here is very low compared to other countries. Graphics design and animation can also be two more sectors which can be added to BPO basket.
Some random information says that, the development of a 5 minute animation in our country costs 5 times less than that of India. Though it apparently seems that BPO is very much technology driven, the highly potential BPO sector requires only ten percent technical expertise, 50 percent marketing expertise at international level and rest is dependent on the ability to fulfill contractual obligations. Bangladesh has got enough manpower. What is needed now is to train this manpower to meet the requirements of customers.
