EDINBURGH internet entrepreneurs Nick Fiddes and Adele Telfordhave bought Selkirk weaver DC Dalgliesh in a rescue take-over thatwill see them plough a six-figure sum into the ailing business.
Dr Fiddes and Dr Telford, who are behind tartan goods websiteScotweb, acquired the business from the Dalgliesh family, wholaunched it in 1947. They had been supporting the business withloans for some months.
The pair have launched a new website for the firm in an effort toraise its profile, particularly with potential customers in theUnited States. The Dalgliesh family will continue to run theoperation and sell its garments to the wider garment trade.
Dr Fiddes told The Herald: "Businesses like this have beenfalling like nine-pins. To some extent we think this is a labour oflove. We do not think a business like this should be allowed tofail."
DC Dalgliesh claims to be the last artisan weaver producingtartans to traditional standards. It manufactures every recordedtartan, and produces tartans in lengths as short as four yards,enough for a single garment.
The firm's tartans have been worn by the likes of the Queen,Nelson Mandela and Ivana Trump.
