Qld: Pest and disease laws to be introduced
BRISBANE, April 8 AAP - Laws giving the government wide-ranging powers to tackle majorpest and disease outbreaks will be tabled in Queensland parliament this week.
The Animal and Plant Health Amendment Bill will be introduced by Primary IndustriesMinister Henry Palaszczuk to state parliament during this week's sittings.
Officials will be given extra powers to enter properties and destroy cattle under the new laws.
The laws also include fines of up to $150,000 for an individual breaching a quarantinenotice - a rise of 1,000 per cent on previous fines.
Corporations involved in breaches face new fines of up to $750,000.
The move follows research which showed a major disease outbreak such as foot and mouthor mad cow disease could cost Australia up to $6 billion.
Also this week, the government will introduce a Bill to assist the development of theBrisbane Markets and an amendment Bill to tidy up eight revenue-related Acts.
